After more than two decades on the franchisor side of the business, I’ve learned that early momentum rarely tells the full story. What gets my attention is when experienced operators decide to move before the broader market catches on.
Throughout my career, I’ve worked alongside leaders behind brands like Massage Envy, Starbucks, Elizabeth Arden Red Door, The Joint Chiropractic, and PetSmart. Watching those businesses scale taught me as much from what worked as from what didn’t. Over time, you start recognizing patterns.
The strongest operators look past momentum and focus on fundamentals: product-market fit, predictable client acquisition, four-wall economics, technology, and systems capable of supporting growth.
Early growth is not the signal. Infrastructure is.
Just over two years after we began franchising Sparkle, what stands out isn’t simply the growth. It’s the caliber of operators choosing to move early. Many of the groups partnering with Sparkle have previously scaled brands like Orangetheory Fitness, Massage Envy, European Wax, The Joint Chiropractic, Dave’s Hot Chicken, and Jersey Mike’s.
Experience changes what you look for. Sophisticated operators aren’t just evaluating where a brand is today. They’re looking at whether the infrastructure exists to support what it could become.
That belief shaped how we built Sparkle. I’ve spent my career on the franchisor side. My partner and co-founder, Ben Crawford, brings the operator perspective, while Steve Dick, SVP of Operations, brings decades of pet care operating experience. Together, those perspectives created a simple filter:
If it doesn’t work operationally inside the salon, it doesn’t scale at the brand level.
From the beginning, we believed pet care was approaching the same kind of evolution fitness and personal wellness experienced years earlier. Consumers increasingly expect convenience, trust, consistency, hospitality, and routine care, yet grooming remains highly fragmented and operationally inconsistent.
We saw an opportunity to build around where the category was moving, not where it had been. We call that evolution Quick Service Pet Care, or QSPC: a more systemized, consumer-friendly approach to routine pet care built around predictability, frequency, trust, and operational consistency.
That’s why so much of our focus has gone toward the infrastructure beneath the surface: technology, training, workforce planning, performance visibility, and repeatable processes designed to support consistent execution at scale. Infrastructure may not be the most exciting part of building a brand, but eventually it becomes everything.
Every emerging brand reaches a point when validation gives way to acceleration. Early on, the work is proving the fundamentals: Does the experience resonate? Can demand be generated consistently? Do the economics hold up beyond a spreadsheet?
Once those answers become clear, growth stops being experimental. It becomes operational.
That’s the phase Sparkle is entering now: scaling nationally, responsibly, and alongside experienced operators who understand what disciplined growth requires.
After more than two decades in franchising, one thing has remained remarkably consistent: the best operators rarely position themselves for what an industry looks like today. They position themselves for where it’s going next.
That’s the opportunity we believe exists in pet care. And the next generation of category leaders will likely be defined less by who grew first and more by who built the infrastructure capable of lasting.
